Brownback Supports General Pace on Anti-Gay Comments

March 17th, 2007 by Rob

Republican presidential candidate Sam Brownback has come out in support of General Peter Pace.

Earlier this week, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said, “I believe homosexual acts between two individuals are immoral and that we should not condone immoral acts.”

Senator Brownback says, “We should not expect someone as qualified, accomplished and articulate as General Pace to lack personal views on important moral issues.”

Brownback went on to say, “I do not believe being a homosexual is immoral, but I do believe homosexual acts are.”

Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have also commented on Gen. Pace’s statement.

“Well, I’ve heard from a number of my friends, and I’ve certainly clarified with them any misunderstanding that anyone had, because I disagree with General Pace completely,” Sen. Clinton told Bloomberg News. “I do not think homosexuality is immoral.”

Sen. Obama released a statement Thursday, saying, “I do not agree with General Pace that homosexuality is immoral.”

There were of course other comments on the Republican side. On his campaign bus in Iowa on Thursday, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., declined to comment when asked whether he agreed with Gen. Peter Pace’s comment that homosexuality was immoral. He said he still backs the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. “It’s working.”

Another Republican candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who has been criticized for changing his views on gay rights to conform with conservative views, said he thought Pace’s comments were “inappropriate for public discourse.”

“He can believe what he wants to, that’s the great thing about America - believe in what you want. But in a governmental setting, the right way to go is to show more of an outpouring of tolerance.”

Anthrax scare for Edwards campaign

March 17th, 2007 by Rob

The John Edwards campaign office received an Anthrax scare when a staffer found white powder in an envelope discovered Wednesday.

The campaign office was reopened Thursday, Deputy Campaign Manager Jonathan Prince said.

“The test results of the white powdery substance received yesterday have come back negative, and the authorities have informed us that it is safe to return to the office,” Prince said in a statement Thursday.

The Edwards campaign worker did not know to whom the envelope was addressed or where it was from, investigators said. Chapel Hill police said they didn’t know whether there was any written message in the envelope.

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards said Thursday that if elected, he would appoint a Cabinet-level officer to oversee efforts to fight global poverty and promote democracy abroad.

Edwards said the anti-poverty official would report directly to the president and would coordinate efforts to extend primary education to more than 100 million children in the developing world, improve the United States’ image abroad and coordinate micro-finance loans to small entrepreneurs.

Giuliani’s law firm tied to Venezuela’s Chavez

March 15th, 2007 by Rob

It is not as if Rudy does not have enough problems, but now it is reported that his law firm, Bracewell and Giuliani, are lobbying American lawmakers on behalf of Citgo Petroleum Corp. of Houston. Citgo is the American subsidiary of Petroleos de Venezuela — the state-owned Venezuelan oil company.

This would not have made much news a year ago, but Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is now a enemy of the state in the eyes of the US and its leaders.
